Feedback is a free education to excellence. Seek it with sincerity and receive it with grace.

PRACTICE

Practice makes perfect. We have all heard that a million times but there is so much truth to it (aside from the perfect part, sorry, that won’t happen).

When we rehearse or practise something over and over again, our mind and body become more aware of, and more at ease with the action, which then starts to occur naturally.

Think about something you have wanted to be better at. It could be a sporting skill, speed-reading, painting, driving or public speaking. Whatever it is, the process of improving always starts off hard and is frustrating. Over time and with repetition it gets easier and far more enjoyable, until you become almost addicted to the quest to conquer the skill.

The same goes for your determination to become a better leader. You gain more confidence in your ability after you practise something, and leadership is no different. When a leader displays confidence in a skill or an idea they are presenting, they signal to the people around them that they are doing a good job or that the idea is a sound one.

VISUALISATION

The more we rehearse something, whether that be physically or mentally, or through visualisation, the better we are at eliminating the fear that comes with doing something new. Highly successful people constantly use visualisation to prepare themselves. Seeing is believing. If they can see themselves executing something well, they are halfway to making it happen.

You will have a hugely confident team if you, as their leader, have visualised success and properly prepared by considering all the possible what-ifs in your action plan.

TAKING RISKS

Practice and taking risks go hand in hand when it comes to accomplishing what we want to achieve. The more you practise taking risks by putting your hand up to lead, the easier it will become.

Taking risks is scary for everyone. The key to it, like with most things, is to change your mindset. Reframe what the risk means to you by seeing it as a gateway to success, rather than a roadblock.

When we thought about writing a book it scared the life out of both of us. Neither of us knew exactly how we were going to do it, but we kept asking ourselves, what is the worst thing that could happen? In the end, it was all about our attitude. We wanted to give it a go, despite knowing there was potential for us to fail.

It is one thing to weigh up the risk and go for it, it’s another to be blasé. You’ve got to find a balance between the risk and reward, and be prepared for what will happen if the risk doesn’t come off. You have a book in your hands, so we pulled this one off!

Leading from the front is critical to a successful outcome. Weigh up the pros and cons and gain the respect of your team by having the confidence and determination to take a risk.
